The 2027 BMW iX5: May Not Technically Be Neue Klasse, But You’d Never Know It From the Spec Sheet

The BMW iX5 requires a small disclaimer before we get into the fun part, and I promise the fun part is worth it.

BMW’s iX3 SUV and i3 sedan are both built on the company’s all new Neue Klasse platform, a ground up architecture designed exclusively for electric vehicles. The iX5 is not. It rides on a modified version of BMW’s existing CLAR platform, the same architecture that underpins the gas powered and hybrid X5 variants. BMW made this choice because the X5 needs to be produced with combustion, hybrid, and fully electric powertrains on the same assembly line at their Spartanburg, South Carolina plant. Building a separate Neue Klasse production line just for the electric version would have added cost and complexity, which is why the iX5 shares its architecture with the gas X5.

Here’s why that distinction matters less than you might think. While the iX5’s bones are CLAR, its brain and its muscle are pure Neue Klasse. It uses the same sixth generation eDrive motors, the same new cylindrical battery cells, the same 800 volt electrical architecture, and the same Heart of Joy control unit that manages driving dynamics across the iX3 and i3. It also runs the same Panoramic iDrive software. BMW essentially transplanted the best parts of their new technology into the skeleton of their most proven SUV platform, which is a move that prioritizes real world capability over architecture bragging rights.

Think of it this way. The iX3 was born electric. The iX5 was adopted into the family, given the same education, and handed the same tools. The results, on paper at least, speak for themselves.

The Biggest Battery BMW Has Ever Built

The iX5 60 xDrive carries a 141 kWh battery pack, the largest BMW has ever installed in a production vehicle. That’s roughly 30 kWh more than the iX3, and it needs every bit of it. The X5 is a bigger, heavier vehicle with more air resistance, and the battery has to compensate for the inherent inefficiency of adapting an architecture that wasn’t originally designed for electric power.

WLTP range estimates fall between 400 and 525 miles depending on configuration, which is a wide spread that reflects the different wheel, tire, and drive mode combinations available. Official EPA numbers haven’t been published yet, and since EPA ratings typically come in 10 to 20 percent below WLTP, US buyers should expect a range somewhere in the 340 to 440 mile window. That’s still excellent for a vehicle this size, and I’ll update this article when BMW releases the EPA certification.

Charging takes advantage of the 800 volt architecture with support for up to 460 kW DC fast charging, which is actually faster than the iX3’s already impressive 400 kW maximum. At those speeds, the iX5 should recover substantial range in short charging stops, though BMW hasn’t published specific minute by mile figures for the US market yet.

Performance

The iX5 60 xDrive produces 578 horsepower from its dual motor setup, making it the most powerful electric BMW SUV available. It reaches 62 mph in 4.6 seconds, which is quick for a vehicle that weighs as much as the iX5 does. The battery pack adds roughly 1,320 pounds compared to the lightest gas powered X5, and that weight is the cost of electrifying a platform that was designed around internal combustion. Physics doesn’t negotiate, but 578 horsepower goes a long way toward making the extra weight invisible from behind the wheel.

Standard air suspension keeps the ride comfortable across varying road surfaces, and BMW offers optional active anti roll bars and rear wheel steering for buyers who want the iX5 to feel smaller than it is in parking lots and tighter corners. The Heart of Joy control unit manages torque distribution between the front and rear motors in real time, adjusting for grip, road surface, and driving style faster than any human could.

Price and Availability

The iX5 starts at $79,800 plus destination, with US deliveries expected in the first quarter of 2027. That positions it squarely in the luxury electric SUV segment alongside the Mercedes EQS SUV, the Audi Q8 e tron, and the upcoming Porsche Cayenne Electric.

At that price, the iX5 is roughly $17,000 more than the Neue Klasse iX3, which raises a fair question about what the extra money buys. The answer is size, power, and presence. The X5 has always been BMW’s flagship SUV for families who need space and capability without stepping up to the X7, and the iX5 fills that role with a powertrain that happens to run on electricity. If you need a larger vehicle and you want it to be a BMW, this is your option, and it’s a very good one.

Inside

The iX5 gets the same Panoramic iDrive system as its Neue Klasse siblings, with the wide format windshield display and the 17.9 inch center touchscreen running BMW’s Operating System X. There’s also an optional 14.6 inch passenger display. The interior materials reflect the X5’s position as a premium offering, with higher end leather options, more ambient lighting configurations, and the kind of build quality that the X5 has delivered consistently for three generations running.

The driving experience features BMW has loaded into this platform are extensive. Active cruise control, lane keeping assistance, steering assistance, blind spot monitoring, forward collision mitigation, and BMW’s parking assist system are all available. An optional Level 2+ driver assist package handles most driving tasks on mapped highways while requiring the driver to remain attentive and ready to intervene.

The Hydrogen Footnote

In a detail that belongs in its own conversation but deserves mention here, BMW has confirmed that a hydrogen fuel cell version of the X5 will follow in 2028, developed in partnership with Toyota. The same vehicle platform will then offer gas, hybrid, fully electric, and hydrogen powertrains, which is either an ambitious bet on flexibility or an admission that nobody knows which technology wins in the long run. Probably both.

How It Fits in the Lineup

The iX5 occupies an interesting position in BMW’s electric roster. It’s not the technology flagship. That role belongs to the iX3 and i3, which ride on the dedicated Neue Klasse platform and showcase what BMW can do when they design from scratch. The iX5 is the pragmatic choice, the vehicle for buyers who need more space, more power, and a familiar X5 ownership experience, but want it electrified with the best available technology.

In my opinion, that’s a perfectly valid place to be. Not every EV needs to be a clean sheet revolution. Some people want a great electric SUV that drives like a BMW, has room for their family, and can charge fast enough to make road trips painless. The iX5 appears to deliver on all of those things, and the fact that it borrows Neue Klasse technology without requiring the Neue Klasse platform to do it is a testament to how modular BMW’s approach has become.

The question that remains is whether the CLAR platform creates a noticeable difference in driving dynamics or efficiency compared to the ground up Neue Klasse vehicles. That’s something we won’t be able to answer until independent reviewers get seat time in both the iX3 and iX5 back to back. My expectation is that the iX5 will feel like a larger, heavier, more comfortable vehicle with slightly less range efficiency, which is exactly what it’s designed to be. If it delivers that with the charging speed and technology BMW is promising, most buyers in this segment won’t think twice about the platform underneath.

The iX5 arrives at US dealerships in early 2027. If you’re shopping for a full size luxury electric SUV, add it to the list. I think it belongs there.
