BMW’s Electric Reinvention Is Here: Three New EVs That Could Change Everything

BMW has been promising a new era of electric vehicles for years. The kind of sweeping, clean sheet reinvention that companies talk about in press conferences and then quietly delay. Except BMW didn’t delay. The first wave is here, it’s real, and the numbers are genuinely startling.

The company’s Neue Klasse platform, which translates from German as “New Class,” represents BMW’s biggest single investment in company history. It’s a ground up rethinking of how BMW builds electric cars, and the first vehicles built on it are arriving at US dealerships this fall. A second Neue Klasse model follows in 2027, and a third EV, built on a different platform but loaded with Neue Klasse technology, joins shortly after.

Here’s what’s coming, what makes each one interesting, and why I think BMW just made life very difficult for everyone else in the luxury EV space.

The 2027 BMW iX3: The One That Starts It All

The iX3 is BMW’s first Neue Klasse production vehicle, and it’s the one you can configure and reserve right now on bmwusa.com with a $1,000 deposit. US deliveries begin in late September 2026.

The headline number is range. The iX3 50 xDrive is EPA estimated at up to 434 miles on a full charge with 20 inch summer tires, dropping to 383 miles on larger wheels. To put that in perspective, the Tesla Model Y Premium AWD is rated at 327 miles. The Cadillac Lyriq tops out at 314. The Mercedes EQE SUV sits around 300. If BMW’s number holds up in real world driving, the iX3 may have the longest range of any electric SUV in its class by a significant margin.

Charging is equally impressive. The iX3 runs on an 800 volt architecture and can accept up to 400 kW from a DC fast charger. BMW says it’ll add approximately 185 miles of range in 10 minutes and go from 10 to 80 percent in 21 minutes. That’s faster than the Hyundai Ioniq 5, which has been the charging speed benchmark for years.

Under the hood (or more accurately, under the floor), the iX3 50 xDrive runs dual motors producing 463 horsepower and 476 pound feet of torque, hitting 60 in about 4.9 seconds. The battery is a 112.2 kWh pack using BMW’s new cylindrical 4695 cells, which offer 20% more energy density while cutting weight by 10% and manufacturing costs by 20% compared to the outgoing system. The charging port is native NACS, so Supercharger access is built in from day one.

The price starts at $61,500 plus a $1,350 destination charge, landing at $62,850 out the door. That’s actually $5,000 less than the comparable gas powered BMW X3 M50 xDrive, which is a sentence that would have sounded absurd two years ago. A fully loaded iX3 pushes to roughly $82,000 with every option checked, but the standard equipment list is generous enough that most buyers won’t need to go that far.

Inside, the iX3 debuts BMW’s Panoramic iDrive system running on their new Operating System X. There’s a wide format display spanning the base of the windshield and a 17.9 inch center touchscreen. Wireless Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, active cruise control with steering assistance, and blind spot monitoring are all standard.

In my opinion, the iX3 is BMW’s most important vehicle launch in a decade. The range and charging numbers, if they hold up under independent testing, would give BMW an advantage that no competitor in this segment can currently match. I’m looking forward to seeing real world test results from independent reviewers, and I think a lot of people who’ve been waiting for a luxury EV that eliminates range anxiety are going to find exactly what they’ve been looking for.

The 2027 BMW i3 Sedan: The Electric 3 Series the World Has Been Waiting For

The i3 is the second Neue Klasse model and the one that could do the most damage to Tesla’s grip on the premium electric sedan market. It’s BMW’s electric equivalent of the 3 Series, the car that built the brand’s reputation as the maker of the ultimate driving machine.

BMW officially revealed the i3 earlier this year, and production is scheduled to begin at the company’s Munich factory in August 2026. European deliveries start in the fall, with US deliveries confirmed for 2027. BMW recently opened “First Edition” orders in Germany ahead of the official market launch, which suggests demand is strong enough that they moved the timeline up.

The i3 50 xDrive launches first, with dual motors producing 463 horsepower and the same 800 volt, 400 kW charging architecture as the iX3. BMW’s internal testing, which mimics the EPA’s procedure, puts range at up to 440 miles. That would make it the longest range electric sedan available in the US outside of the Lucid Air, which starts at nearly twice the price.

A second trim, the i3 40 xDrive, has been confirmed for the US market and will likely arrive later in the model year as a more affordable entry point. US pricing has not been officially announced yet, but analyst estimates place the 50 xDrive between $55,000 and $60,000, with the 40 xDrive potentially starting closer to $50,000. I’ll update this article when BMW confirms the numbers.

Like the iX3, the i3 gets BMW’s Panoramic iDrive system, bidirectional charging capability (meaning it can function as a backup generator), and a native NACS charging port. It shares the same sixth generation eDrive technology, the same cylindrical cell batteries, and the same 800 volt platform.

Here’s what I find most interesting about the i3. The Tesla Model 3, which is the car BMW is clearly targeting, tops out at 363 miles of EPA rated range on the Long Range trim. If BMW’s 440 mile estimate translates to anything close to that on the EPA test, the i3 would beat the Model 3 on range by roughly 80 miles while also offering the kind of interior quality and driving dynamics that have defined BMW for decades. That’s the kind of gap that changes shopping lists.

The 2027 BMW iX5: Neue Klasse Tech on a Different Foundation

The iX5 deserves a slightly different introduction than the other two, because while it looks like a Neue Klasse vehicle and uses much of the same technology, it’s actually built on a different platform.

The iX3 and i3 ride on BMW’s purpose built Neue Klasse architecture, which was designed from the ground up exclusively for electric vehicles. The iX5, by contrast, rides on a modified version of BMW’s existing CLAR platform, which also underpins the gas powered and hybrid X5 variants. BMW made this decision because the X5 needs to be offered with combustion, hybrid, and fully electric powertrains on the same production line at their Spartanburg, South Carolina plant. Building a dedicated Neue Klasse version of the X5 would have required an entirely separate manufacturing setup, and BMW chose flexibility over platform purity.

That said, the iX5 borrows heavily from Neue Klasse where it counts most. It uses BMW’s sixth generation eDrive motors, the same new cylindrical battery cells, an 800 volt electrical architecture capable of up to 460 kW DC fast charging, and the Heart of Joy control unit that manages driving dynamics, energy recovery, and torque distribution across all four wheels. It also gets the same Panoramic iDrive software and infotainment system.

The iX5 60 xDrive produces 578 horsepower from its dual motor setup and carries the largest battery pack BMW has ever installed in a production vehicle at 141 kWh of usable capacity. WLTP range estimates run between 400 and 525 miles depending on configuration, though we’ll need to wait for official EPA numbers, which will be lower. It hits 62 mph in 4.6 seconds, rides on standard air suspension, and offers optional active anti roll bars and rear wheel steering.

US pricing starts at $79,800 plus destination, with deliveries expected in the first quarter of 2027. A hydrogen fuel cell version is planned for 2028 in partnership with Toyota, which is a fascinating footnote for a vehicle that’s already offering three different powertrain options.

In my opinion, the iX5 is a smart compromise. It doesn’t have the platform purity of the iX3 or i3, but it delivers Neue Klasse level performance and technology in a larger, more versatile package. For buyers who need the space and capability of a full size luxury SUV, the iX5 represents a compelling option that didn’t exist six months ago.

What This Means for the Market

Step back and look at what BMW is doing across these three vehicles, and the scale of the ambition becomes clear. Range numbers that lead the segment. Charging speeds that match or beat the best in the industry. An 800 volt architecture across the lineup. And pricing that, at least in the case of the iX3, comes in lower than the equivalent gas BMW.

BMW’s CEO Oliver Zipse announced that 40 model launches are planned by 2027, the most aggressive product offensive in the company’s history. These three EVs are the leading edge of that wave, and based on what we’ve seen so far, they’re coming in strong.

The real test comes when independent reviewers put serious miles on these cars and verify whether the promised range and charging numbers hold up on real roads. EPA window stickers are one thing. Real world results are another, and the entire EV industry has learned that lesson the hard way. But if BMW delivers even close to what they’re promising, the luxury EV market just got a lot more competitive. And given BMW’s long track record of underpromising and overdelivering on performance specs, my money is on them meeting or beating these numbers.

I think BMW deserves credit for the engineering here. The Neue Klasse platform wasn’t a rush job. It was years in development, backed by the largest investment in the company’s history, and the first vehicles built on it are arriving on schedule with specs that would have seemed unrealistic even two years ago. Whether the execution matches the ambition is something we’ll find out this fall. I’m optimistic, and I don’t say that about every new EV launch.
