The 2027 BMW i3 Sedan: 440 Miles of Range and a Direct Challenge to Tesla’s Best Seller
The 3 Series is the car that made BMW famous. It’s the reason “ultimate driving machine” became more than a tagline. For decades, if you wanted a sport sedan that was genuinely fun to drive and happened to be practical enough for daily life, the 3 Series was the answer before the question was finished. Now BMW is betting that same reputation can carry over to an electric vehicle, and based on the early specs, they’re not being shy about it.
The 2027 BMW i3 is the second vehicle built on BMW’s Neue Klasse platform, following the iX3 SUV that arrives at US dealerships this fall. It’s an all new electric sedan designed to compete directly with the Tesla Model 3 and the upcoming Mercedes C Class Electric. Production starts at BMW’s Munich factory in August 2026, with European deliveries beginning in the fall and US deliveries confirmed for 2027.
BMW recently opened “First Edition” orders in Germany, a move that suggests internal demand forecasts are strong enough that the company wanted to start taking money ahead of the official launch. That’s either confidence or impatience, and with BMW, it’s usually confidence.
The Range Number That Got Everyone’s Attention
BMW’s internal testing, which the company says mimics the EPA’s procedure, puts the i3 50 xDrive at up to 440 miles on a full charge. Official EPA certification will come closer to the US launch date, but if the number lands anywhere near 440, it would make the i3 the longest range electric sedan available in the United States outside of the Lucid Air, which starts at roughly twice the price.
For comparison, the Tesla Model 3 Long Range is rated at 363 miles. The BMW i4 eDrive40, which the i3 effectively replaces, tops out at about 301 miles. The gap between 363 and 440 is 77 miles, which is roughly the distance from downtown Los Angeles to San Diego. That’s not a rounding error. That’s an entire city’s worth of extra driving before you need to think about a charger.
The WLTP rating, used in Europe, is even higher at 559 miles, though WLTP tests are about 10 to 20 percent more generous than the EPA’s methodology. The EPA number is the one US buyers should focus on, and 440 miles is still remarkable by any standard.
Charging and Platform
The i3 shares the same Neue Klasse DNA as the iX3, which means an 800 volt architecture and up to 400 kW DC fast charging. BMW says the i3 can add approximately 200 miles of range in 10 minutes, which is the kind of refueling speed that starts to close the gap between electric and gas powered convenience.
The battery is expected to be around 109 kWh using the same sixth generation cylindrical cells found in the iX3. The charging port is native NACS, so the Tesla Supercharger network is accessible from day one. Bidirectional charging is also included, meaning the i3 can function as a portable power source, a feature that sounds like a novelty until the first time you lose power at home and your car keeps the refrigerator running.
Performance
The i3 50 xDrive launches first with dual motors producing 463 horsepower through all wheel drive. BMW hasn’t published a US market zero to 60 time yet, but the iX3, which shares the same powertrain configuration, covers that sprint in about 4.9 seconds. In a lower, lighter sedan body, the i3 should match or beat that number.
A second trim, the i3 40 xDrive, has been confirmed for the US market and will arrive later in the model year. Expect it to offer a lower output motor configuration at a more accessible price point, potentially bringing the i3 within reach of buyers who would otherwise be shopping the Tesla Model 3 or the Polestar 2.
What It Looks Like
The i3 carries BMW’s new Neue Klasse design language, which is a significant departure from the brand’s recent styling. The controversial oversized kidney grilles that divided opinions on the iX and i4 are gone, replaced by a cleaner, more restrained front end. The overall proportions are sedan classic, with a long hood, a planted stance, and a roofline that tapers without resorting to the aggressive fastback shapes that have become default in the segment.
Inside, the i3 gets the same Panoramic iDrive system as the iX3, with a wide format display spanning the windshield base and a 17.9 inch center touchscreen. BMW’s Operating System X runs the show, and the interior uses more sustainable materials as part of BMW’s broader environmental commitments. The iDrive rotary knob, a feature that defined BMW interiors for 20 years, doesn’t make the trip. Whether that’s progress or loss depends on how attached you are to spinning things while driving.
Pricing
US pricing has not been officially announced. Analyst estimates place the i3 50 xDrive between $55,000 and $60,000, with the i3 40 xDrive potentially starting closer to $50,000. For reference, the outgoing BMW i4 eDrive40 starts at $52,200, and the gas powered 3 Series starts around $45,000. I’ll update this article when BMW confirms the numbers.
If the i3 does land around $55,000 for the 50 xDrive, it would be priced competitively with the Tesla Model 3 Performance at $54,990 while offering substantially more range and the kind of interior refinement that Tesla’s minimalist approach doesn’t prioritize. That’s a compelling value proposition for anyone who’s been waiting for a premium electric sedan that doesn’t ask you to choose between technology and craftsmanship.
Why This One Matters
The 3 Series has been BMW’s volume anchor for decades. It’s the car that brings people into the brand, the one they recommend to friends, the one that shows up in every “best sports sedan” list year after year. If BMW can translate that identity into an electric vehicle, the implications for the broader market are significant.
Tesla has owned the premium electric sedan space essentially unchallenged since the Model 3 launched in 2017. The Polestar 2 is good but niche. The Mercedes EQE sedan is comfortable but hasn’t captured the public’s imagination. The Audi e tron GT is beautiful but expensive. None of them have combined the range, charging speed, performance, and brand cachet that BMW is bringing to the table with the i3.
In my opinion, the i3 is the first electric sedan that could genuinely give the Model 3 a competitive headache, not by being cheaper or flashier, but by being better at the things BMW has always been best at. Driving dynamics, interior quality, and engineering depth are the 3 Series legacy, and if the i3 delivers on those while also offering class leading range and charging speed, it’ll deserve every bit of attention it gets.
The i3 arrives in the US in 2027. Keep an eye on this one. I think it’s going to be worth the wait.
