The 2026 GMC Sierra EV: The Grown Up in GMC’s Electric Truck Family Just Got a Lot More Affordable

GMC has two electric trucks, and they have very different personalities. The Hummer EV is the wild sibling, the one that walks sideways, launches like a rocket, and shows up to every gathering determined to be the center of attention. The Sierra EV is the other one, the sensible, capable, professionally minded truck that quietly gets the actual work done. And for 2026, the Sierra EV made the single smartest move a truck like this could make: it got dramatically cheaper to get into.

The Sierra EV is GMC’s full size electric pickup, a near mechanical twin to the Chevrolet Silverado EV but wrapped in GMC’s more premium, more upscale packaging. For its first couple of years, it was available only in the top Denali trim, which meant it was excellent but expensive. The 2026 model changes that completely by adding two new lower trims and a smaller battery option, dropping the entry price by nearly $28,000. That’s not a typo. The Sierra EV went from a six figure luxury flagship to a truck that starts in the low $60,000s, and that changes everything about who can consider one.

The Lineup Finally Makes Sense

The big story for 2026 is the expanded lineup, which now spans three trims and three battery options, giving buyers real choice instead of a single expensive configuration.

The new Elevation is the entry point, starting around $62,400 to $65,490 depending on how you count destination, and it comes with a genuinely generous list of standard equipment. Even in base form, it packs a full 605 horsepower, standard all wheel drive, a heated steering wheel, and a 360 degree camera system. For most electric truck buyers, the Elevation has nearly everything they’d actually want.

The new AT4 is the off road focused trim, adding a two inch lift, 35 inch all terrain tires, four wheel steering, front and rear electronic locking differentials, red tow hooks, and skid plates borrowed from lessons learned on the Hummer EV program. It starts around $81,395 and climbs to about $91,695 with the Max Range battery. This is the trim for buyers who need genuine trail capability without giving up electric range and towing muscle.

The Denali remains at the top, the plush, near luxury flagship it has always been, now available with any of the three batteries and starting around $71,795 with the new Standard Range pack. The ultra posh Denali Reserve models crown the lineup past $100,000.

The Battery Choices and the Range King Title

The Sierra EV now offers three battery packs, and they meaningfully change the truck’s character and price. The Standard Range 120 kWh pack delivers 283 miles, the Extended Range pack pushes to 410 miles in most trims, and the Max Range 205 kWh pack tops out at a genuinely remarkable 478 miles in the AT4 and Denali.

That 478 mile figure matters, because it’s essentially segment leading. Among full size electric trucks, nothing offers meaningfully more usable range, and that huge ceiling gives the Sierra EV a buffer that transforms the electric truck ownership experience. Long distance towing, which normally cuts EV truck range dramatically, becomes far less stressful when you’re starting from nearly 500 miles. As one reviewer noted, even when range drops significantly while towing, the Sierra EV still offers more range than any of its rivals.

Built to Work, Built to Haul

The Sierra EV backs up its range with genuine capability. It tows up to 12,500 pounds with the Extended Range battery, which rivals plenty of gas powered full size trucks and beats most electric competitors. And it brings the clever engineering that makes electric trucks genuinely useful, including the MultiPro Midgate, which folds down the rear seats and opens the wall between cab and bed to extend the load floor for long cargo, and the MultiPro tailgate with its multiple configurations.

Every Sierra EV also offers Super Cruise, GM’s excellent hands free highway driving system, and crucially it works while towing a trailer, which is a feature still rare among competitors and genuinely valuable for anyone hauling long distances. The 16.8 inch infotainment display runs Google Built In, and the interior, particularly on the Denali, delivers the upscale, premium feel that separates GMC from its Chevrolet twin.

The Considerations

A few things worth knowing. The entry Elevation trim, while well equipped, lacks some of the interior polish of the pricier versions, so if cabin richness matters to you, the Denali is where the Sierra EV feels genuinely luxurious. Like other GM electric vehicles, it runs Google Built In, and while that system is capable, some buyers will miss having Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

The Sierra EV’s history is worth knowing. When this truck first launched in Denali only form, one reviewer was quite critical of its early driving dynamics. The good news is that GMC has clearly been listening, and the 2026 updates, particularly the AT4 package, address many of those early complaints, resulting in a much more polished and capable truck than the one that first arrived. And of course, federal tax credit eligibility has been in flux, so anyone counting on an incentive should confirm the current status before purchase.

Where I Land

The Sierra EV is the electric truck for people who want genuine capability and premium comfort without the Hummer EV’s circus act, and the 2026 changes make it far more attainable than it has ever been. The expanded lineup means you can get into a genuinely capable, long range, upscale electric truck for tens of thousands less than before, and that accessibility is a bigger deal than any single spec.

In my opinion, the Sierra EV is the sensible, grown up choice in GMC’s electric truck showroom. It leads its class in range, it tows like a serious work truck, it offers real off road capability in AT4 form, and it wraps all of that in GMC’s premium packaging. The Elevation trim is the value pick for most buyers, the AT4 is the one for genuine trail use, and the Denali is there when you want your capable work truck to also feel like a luxury vehicle. It’s not the flashiest electric truck GMC builds, that title belongs firmly to its sideways walking sibling, but it might be the smartest. Sometimes the grown up in the family is the one worth betting on, and the Sierra EV makes that case convincingly.
