It shares its platform with the Hyundai Ioniq 9, its closely related cousin, but the EV9 arrived first and established itself as the benchmark that other affordable three row electric SUVs are measured against.
The Full Package, Delivered
The EV9’s greatest strength is how few compromises it asks you to make, and that’s genuinely rare in this class. It’s spacious, seating six or seven depending on configuration, with a genuinely usable interior and up to 81.7 cubic feet of cargo space with the seats folded. It’s practical, towing up to 5,000 pounds, which is real capability for a family that hauls a trailer or boat. And it’s comfortable and refined, with reviewers consistently noting it punches above its price in terms of quietness and interior quality.
The interior is genuinely lovely, with available features like a curved dual 12.3 inch display setup, premium Meridian audio, tri zone climate control, USB-C ports across all three rows, and even clever swiveling second row seats on some configurations. The other is a new blacked out Nightfall Edition, based on the Land trim, which adds gloss black exterior accents, black 20 inch wheels, an exclusive all black interior, and a new Roadrider Brown paint option.
Interestingly, the Nightfall Edition also gains a standard Boost mode that drops its 0 to 60 time to a genuinely quick 4.7 seconds. That extra punch may help explain why Kia has indefinitely postponed the rumored high performance GT version of the EV9, since the existing lineup already delivers plenty of pace for a family SUV.

The EV9’s value proposition is genuinely strong, and it’s clearest when you look at the competition. Its closest relative is the Hyundai Ioniq 9, with which it shares a platform, so many of the EV9’s virtues apply to the Hyundai too, and the two are worth cross shopping directly. Against the luxury three row electric SUVs, though, the EV9’s case is compelling. It undercuts rivals like the Rivian R1S, Tesla Model X, Volvo EX90, and Mercedes EQS SUV on price, often significantly, while matching or beating them on features, tech, and genuine third row comfort. For families who want size, range, value, and comfort without a luxury price tag, few vehicles deliver the complete package as well.
The EV9’s resale values have been tracking above average for the electric SUV segment, and Kia backs it with a genuinely strong 10 year or 100,000 mile battery and EV system warranty, both of which add real peace of mind to the ownership equation.
The Considerations
A few notes. The EV9’s styling is genuinely divisive, with bold creases, angular shapes, and irregular lighting elements that some people love and others find challenging. It’s worth seeing one in person to decide which camp you’re in. The third row, while usable, is described by reviewers as adequate rather than exceptional for adults, though kids will be perfectly happy back there, which is true of most vehicles in this class.
Some features are also tied to a Kia Connect subscription, which is worth understanding before you buy, and the EV9’s substantial size, while great for space, makes it less nimble in tight parking situations. These are minor points against a genuinely accomplished vehicle.

The EV9 is the three row electric family SUV that wins not by being flashy but by being genuinely excellent at everything that matters, and its repeated recognition from the automotive press is thoroughly earned. In my opinion, the EV9 is one of the smartest three row electric SUV buys on the market, especially for families who want genuine space, real capability, and premium comfort without spending into luxury territory. Its blend of utility, refinement, range, and value is hard to argue with, and the strong warranty and above average resale only strengthen the case. Its closest competition is its own Hyundai cousin, so cross shop the two, but against the broader field, the EV9 stands out as the affordable three row electric SUV that genuinely does it all. Sometimes the best car in a class is simply the one that gets everything right, and the EV9 has been quietly doing exactly that.
