For a brand that had been struggling to make its electric cars feel like a coherent vision, the CLA is exactly the confident, well resolved effort it needed.

The Range and Charging Genuinely Impress

Let’s start with the numbers that matter most, because this is where the CLA makes its strongest case. The base CLA 250+ with EQ Technology, to use Mercedes’ full name for it, delivers up to 374 miles of EPA estimated range from its 85 kWh battery. That’s a genuinely excellent figure for a car in this price range, and notably, it beats the comparable Tesla Model 3. One respected outlet even exceeded it substantially in their own real world testing, reaching well over 400 miles, which suggests the official rating is conservative.

Then there’s the charging, which is where the new architecture really shines. The CLA rides on an advanced 800 volt system, and the results are genuinely impressive. On a capable fast charger, it can add around 100 miles of range in just five minutes, or roughly 200 miles in about 10 minutes, filling from 10 to 80 percent in around 22 minutes. That’s among the quicker charging experiences available at any price, and it addresses one of the biggest practical frustrations of electric ownership. This is the kind of technology that makes an EV genuinely easy to live with.

The Lineup

The CLA comes in two powertrains. The base CLA 250+ uses a single rear motor producing 268 horsepower, sends power to the rear wheels, delivers that class leading 374 mile range, and reaches 60 mph in about 6.6 seconds. The step up CLA 350 4Matic adds a front motor for all wheel drive, jumps to 349 horsepower, and cuts the sprint to 60 mph to a genuinely quick 4.8 seconds, though its range drops to around 312 miles since it uses the same battery. Both are offered in Exclusive and Pinnacle trims, letting buyers add luxury and technology to taste. It’s a refreshingly simple lineup, and crucially, the entry point delivers the best range, so the sensible choice and the long range choice are the same car.

Inside, the CLA showcases Mercedes’ latest thinking, and it’s a genuine step forward from the earlier EQ cars. The centerpiece is the available MBUX Superscreen, a vast expanse of display stretching nearly 40 inches across the dashboard, incorporating a driver display, a central infotainment screen, and a dedicated front passenger screen. A few notes. While the CLA’s efficiency is good, it’s worth naming that the class benchmark, the Lucid Air, remains more efficient still, covering more miles from a similarly sized battery. The CLA counters with a lower price, faster charging than many rivals, and the Mercedes badge and ownership experience, but the pure efficiency crown still belongs elsewhere.

It’s also a compact sedan, so it prioritizes style and efficiency over outright interior space, and buyers who need maximum room may find it snug in the back compared to an SUV. And while the starting price is genuinely competitive for a luxury EV, climbing through the trims and options can add up quickly, as tends to happen with any Mercedes. The base Tesla Model 3 also undercuts it on price, though the CLA counters with more range and a more overtly luxurious cabin.

Where I Land

The CLA Electric is the car that signals Mercedes has genuinely figured out its electric approach, and that’s a significant thing after the uneven first attempt. It delivers long range, seriously fast charging, cutting edge technology, and a genuinely competitive price, all wrapped in a handsome compact sedan that feels like a real Mercedes rather than an awkward experiment. It’s the confident fresh start the brand needed.

In my opinion, the CLA is one of the more compelling compact luxury electric sedans on the market, particularly for the buyer who wants genuine Mercedes luxury and technology without a six figure price tag. Its 374 mile range and rapid charging make it genuinely easy to live with, its technology is a real leap forward, and its sub $50,000 starting price makes premium electric motoring surprisingly attainable. There’s a bit of an efficiency gap to the very best in class, and it asks Mercedes money once you start adding options, but as the opening statement of the brand’s electric do over, the CLA is a genuinely strong one. It suggests the best of Mercedes’ electric future is still ahead, and if the rest of the new family lives up to this first effort, the brand’s rough electric beginning will be a distant memory.
