The 2026 Polestar 3: The Best Electric SUV You May Not Be Able to Buy

Polestar announced that it’s pulling out of the US market for 2027, and the Polestar 3, one of the most polished electric SUVs on the road, suddenly became a car that a lot of American shoppers can’t easily buy new. It’s a strange way to open a review of what may be the most complete electric SUV you can find under $90,000.

But it’s the place to start. The Polestar 3 was designed as a serious, quiet, uncommonly well built electric SUV, and it delivered on that promise. The catch is that in a US market that’s been chewing through EV brands like disposable ones, being the good one wasn’t enough. What follows is a review of what the Polestar 3 is, why I’d still take it seriously as a used car, and where it sits against the competition. If you’re reading this in 2027 or later, chances are you’re looking at a late-model used Polestar 3 with substantial depreciation, a service network still supporting it through its Volvo affiliation, and a real bargain in front of you. Let’s walk through why that might be one of the smarter EV buys of the year.

Design and Exterior

The Polestar 3 is minimalist without being cold, which is a harder trick to pull off than it sounds. Where the Mercedes EQS SUV tries to look futuristic by rounding every edge, and where the Cadillac Lyriq goes full jewelry with its lighting, the Polestar 3 does the opposite. It stands still. The proportions are long and low for an SUV, the shoulders sit tall over the wheels, and there’s a subtle aerodynamic wing that splits the front hood. Polestar calls it the SmartZone, and it houses the front radar.

It looks like what a Scandinavian architect would design if you asked for an SUV. Clean, deliberate, and confident enough not to shout. In a segment full of cars that dress up to be noticed, the Polestar 3 is comfortable being underestimated.

Interior and Tech

Step inside and the theme continues. The Polestar 3’s cabin is a masterclass in restraint. The dashboard is dominated by a big vertical touchscreen, but it doesn’t feel like a tech showroom. Materials are honest, buttons are where they need to be (steering wheel, mostly), and the whole thing feels like it was designed by people who actually drive cars for hours at a time.

The infotainment runs on Google built in, which means Google Maps, Google Assistant, and Google Play are native to the car. If you use Google’s ecosystem this is genuinely delightful. Route to a charger and the car preheats the battery. Ask “hey Google, what’s this song” and it tells you. Send an address from your phone and it shows up in the nav. It’s the first non Tesla infotainment I’ve used that feels like it was built by software people, not by an old school automotive interior team.

The rear seats are actually spacious, the panoramic roof is standard, and the cargo hold is generous. Second row headroom is class competitive even with the sloped roofline. Materials range from recycled polyester to what Polestar calls MicroTech (a wool blend option) to genuine Nappa leather on higher trims, and even the base seats feel like they belong in a car more expensive than this one.

Powertrain and Performance

Every Polestar 3 gets two motors, one at each axle, for standard all wheel drive. The base Long Range Dual Motor makes 489 horsepower and 620 lb-ft of torque, good for a 4.8 second zero to 60. Step up to the Performance Pack and you’re looking at 517 horsepower and 671 lb-ft, and a 4.5 second sprint. Neither one is what most people would call slow.

Acceleration numbers miss what actually makes the Polestar 3 good. This is a serious car to drive fast, not a novelty. The suspension is dual chamber air with active dampers, the torque vectoring is sharp, and the whole platform (which it shares with the Volvo EX90) has the kind of stability at speed that most SUVs pretend to have and don’t. On a winding road it feels smaller and more precise than a two and a half ton car has any right to.

Range and Charging

The Long Range Dual Motor is EPA rated at 315 miles. The Performance Pack drops that to about 279 miles because the extra power and stickier tires eat some efficiency. Both are competitive numbers for the segment, though the Rivian R1S pushes farther, and the Lucid Gravity buries them all.

DC fast charging peaks around 250 kW, which can take the pack from 10 to 80 percent in roughly 30 minutes on a fast enough charger. That’s very good, though not Hyundai/Kia E-GMP fast. Those hit 235 kW and finish faster because their 800V architecture stays more efficient at high state of charge. Home charging on Level 2 fills the pack overnight without drama.

Cold weather range loss is in the standard 20 to 40 percent range for the segment, and the Polestar has a heat pump standard, which helps a lot. Preconditioning while plugged in is straightforward through the app.

Driver Assistance

Polestar’s driver assistance is called Pilot Assist, and it’s a hands on Level 2 system. It handles adaptive cruise and lane centering on highways with the driver’s supervision. It’s competent. It’s not Tesla’s Full Self-Driving (Supervised), and it’s not GM’s Super Cruise. It’s the kind of thoughtful highway helper that Volvo has been refining for years, and that lineage shows.

The bigger story is what may be coming. Polestar has been developing a lidar equipped system in partnership with Zenseact, and select higher trims came pre wired for it. Whether the software actually reaches US market cars given the market exit is another question entirely.

Ride and Handling

Here’s where the Polestar 3 quietly separates itself. On the adaptive air suspension, the ride is genuinely composed at any speed, and the steering has actual feedback, which is rare in a big electric SUV. Push it and the chassis stays flat, the torque vectoring cleans up the exit of every corner, and the brakes feel like they were designed by engineers who care what a brake pedal feels like.

Most electric SUVs in this price range make you accept that mass has consequences. The Polestar 3 does not. It’s not a sports car, but it has the suspension work of a company that took the assignment seriously.

Competition

At the Polestar 3’s price (roughly $70,000 to $90,000 depending on trim and options), you’re shopping against the Volvo EX90, which shares its platform, the Genesis Electrified GV70, which undercuts on price, the Cadillac Lyriq, and if you stretch the budget, the Mercedes EQS SUV or the Rivian R1S.

The most awkward comparison is against the EX90 because they’re literally the same car underneath. Both share the SPA2 platform, both use similar batteries and motors, and both come from the same Volvo factory in South Carolina. The differences are in tuning (Polestar sharpened the driving, Volvo softened it) and interior character (Volvo went safer and more familiar, Polestar went more minimalist and more Google forward). Choose based on which cabin philosophy speaks to you.

The Weird Part. Being Pulled From the US Market

Polestar announced in mid 2026 that it’s pulling out of the US market for the 2027 model year. New Polestar 3 sales in America wind down over the coming months, and after that you’re shopping the used market or looking at whatever inventory is left on dealer lots. For anyone considering buying new, this is a real problem. For anyone considering buying used or lightly used in 2027 and beyond, it may be an unexpected opportunity. Cars manufactured in the Volvo affiliated factory in South Carolina still exist. Volvo service networks are likely to continue supporting them for years given the shared platform. Software updates and warranty coverage from Polestar aren’t disappearing overnight. And the depreciation curve on a car that’s suddenly not sold new here tends to accelerate in ways that reward the patient used buyer.

None of this means the Polestar 3 stopped being a good car. It means the calculus for buying one shifted. Used, at the right price, with the right service situation nearby, it could be one of the best value plays in the used luxury EV market.

The Verdict

If Polestar had stayed in the US market with a full dealer network and full manufacturer support, the Polestar 3 would earn one of the highest ratings I’ve given a mainstream electric SUV. It’s beautifully built, thoughtfully engineered, seriously fun to drive, and its interior is the most cohesive non Tesla EV experience on the market.

The market situation costs it a step. Not because the car got worse. Because buying one now means accepting some ambiguity about long term software support, service network reach, and resale value. Those aren’t dealbreakers for a used buyer with reasonable expectations. They are worth pricing in.

For the right buyer, in the right situation, in 2026 the Polestar 3 is one of the best electric SUVs money can buy. And in 2027 and beyond, it’s going to be one of the smartest used deals on the market. That’s a rare combination.
