The Complete Guide to Buying a Used Tesla
Used Teslas are everywhere right now. Prices came down from their pandemic highs, lease returns keep flowing into the market, and Tesla has built so many cars over the past decade that the used lot finally has real selection. That’s the good news. The complicated news is that buying a used Tesla is nothing like buying a used Camry. Two cars that look identical in the parking lot can be separated by thousands of dollars in capability because of a computer you can’t see, and the model year alone won’t tell you which one you’re looking at.
This guide covers the five Teslas you’ll actually find on the used market: the Model S, Model 3, Model X, Model Y, and Cybertruck. For each one, I’ll walk through the history, the major changes year to year, the hardware generations that matter, and the specific things I’d check before handing anyone money. It’s long because it needs to be. Bookmark it, and bring it with you when you go look at a car.
First, Learn to Read a Tesla: MCU and HW Explained
Before we get to the individual models, you need to understand the two computers that define what a used Tesla can and can’t do. Tesla shoppers talk about these constantly, and sellers mention them rarely, which tells you who benefits from the knowledge gap.
The MCU: the screen computer
The MCU, or Media Control Unit, runs the touchscreen. Maps, music, settings, cameras, all of it. There have been three generations.
MCU1 shipped in the Model S and Model X into early 2018. It’s slow by modern standards, and its original 8GB memory chip wears out from constant logging. When it fails, the screen goes black or reboots endlessly. Tesla recalled the chip and replaced it with a 64GB unit on affected cars, but not every car on the used market has had the fix. An MCU1 car can also be upgraded to MCU2 at a Tesla service center for around $1,500 to $2,000, which transforms the experience.
MCU2 arrived in 2018 and came standard in every Model 3 and Model Y from the start. It’s reliable and still gets software updates. No major failure pattern.
MCU3 runs on an AMD Ryzen chip and started appearing in 2021 on the refreshed Model S and X, then spread to the 3 and Y in 2022. It’s the fastest, and it’s what you need for the newest games and interface features. You can check which one a car has in the Software menu. If it says AMD Ryzen under Additional Vehicle Information, it’s MCU3.
The HW: the driving computer
The HW number, sometimes written as Hardware 2.0, 2.5, 3, or 4, refers to the Autopilot and Full Self-Driving computer plus its cameras. This is the one that determines whether a used Tesla can run current driver assistance software, and it is the single most important spec on any used Tesla. It cannot be checked from the outside, and the model year alone won’t tell you, because the transitions happened mid production.
Here’s the short history.
HW1 (2014 to 2016) was the original Mobileye based Autopilot on early Model S and X. It’s a dead end. No modern features.
HW2.0 (late 2016 to mid 2017) moved to NVIDIA chips and Tesla’s own software. FSD capable on paper, but the experience is far behind.
HW2.5 (mid 2017 to early 2019) was a modest revision of HW2.0. Here’s the key fact: a car still on HW2.5 cannot run the latest Full Self-Driving software. Tesla offered free HW3 upgrades to HW2.0 and HW2.5 owners who purchased FSD, and most of those cars got the retrofit, but plenty of used examples never did. If you’re looking at a 2017 to early 2019 car, confirming whether the HW3 upgrade happened is essential.
HW3 (2019 to roughly early 2023) was Tesla’s first in house FSD chip and a massive leap. The majority of used Teslas on the market today run HW3. It matters that you understand where HW3 stands in 2026, because the ground shifted this year. On the first quarter earnings call, Tesla confirmed that HW3 does not have the capability to run unsupervised FSD. The company’s answer for HW3 owners is a lighter version of the current software, FSD v14 Lite, which began rolling out to early access HW3 cars on June 29, 2026, with the broader public rollout following in July. So an HW3 car can run today’s supervised FSD in its lighter form, but it will never graduate to the unsupervised system. Tesla has said it intends to offer an upgrade for HW3 cars that would replace both the computer and the cameras, and has suggested owners who bought FSD outright would be prioritized. Tesla has not published pricing or a firm timeline, so treat any specific dollar figures or dates you see quoted elsewhere as third party speculation rather than settled fact. What is certain is that the program has not physically started yet.
HW4, also called AI4 (2023 to present) is the current hardware, with several times the processing power of HW3 and higher resolution cameras. If you want a used Tesla with the longest software runway, HW4 is what you’re shopping for. One visual tell: HW4 front camera housings show two red tinted lenses, where HW3 shows three identical dark lenses. But don’t buy on a lens color. Verify on the screen.
There’s a wrinkle worth knowing for the newest cars. In early 2026 some late 2025 and 2026 Model Ys turned up with components labeled AP45, which set off a flurry of reports about a possible new HW4.5 computer. Tesla then told its sales teams the AP45 marking was a labeling issue rather than a new hardware generation, and that all cars being delivered run HW4 (AI4). So don’t get pulled into that rabbit hole. For a used buyer, the meaningful dividing line remains HW3 versus HW4, full stop. Some of those newer premium Model Ys did get a larger 16-inch center display, which is a nice screen upgrade but not a driving hardware change. Further out, Tesla’s genuinely next generation computer is AI5, also called HW5, with production planned for 2027. The only driving computer with a real capability ceiling on the used market today is HW3.
How to check any car: open Controls, then Software on the touchscreen. The Autopilot computer line will read 3.0 for HW3 or 4.0 for HW4. The 2023 model year is the danger zone, because both shipped during the same model year. Never assume from the year. Read it off the screen.
One more 2026 change worth knowing: Tesla ended the one time FSD purchase in February 2026. FSD is subscription only for new buyers now, which makes a used car that already carries a paid FSD license a genuinely rare thing. More on that in the final section.
Best Used Tesla Years at a Glance
If you read nothing else, read this. Here’s the quick version for each model, the years worth targeting, the years to approach with caution, and the one check you should never skip. The details behind each of these live in the model sections below.
Model S. Target 2019 to 2021 (Raven or Palladium era). Be cautious with pre 2018 cars (MCU1 eMMC failure risk). Never skip: verify the HW version on the screen and test every door handle.
Model 3. Target 2021 to 2023 (mature HW3 builds) or 2024 and newer (Highland, HW4). Be cautious with 2017 to 2018 cars (early build variation, and you must confirm the HW3 retrofit happened). Never skip: the front lateral link inspection, which is the subject of an active 2026 federal investigation.
Model X. Target 2019 to 2021 (Raven) or 2022 and newer (refresh, HW4). Be cautious with 2016 to 2017 cars (the most falcon wing door service history). Never skip: cycle and inspect every falcon wing door.
Model Y. Target 2022 to 2024 (HW4 arrives, build quality sorted) or 2025 and newer (Juniper). Be cautious with 2020 cars (first year fit and finish). Never skip: the front lateral link inspection, same active 2026 investigation as the Model 3.
Cybertruck. All are HW4, so hardware generation isn’t the worry here. Be cautious with the earliest 2024 Foundation Series builds (trim and panel issues, early recalls). Never skip: inspect the stainless panels closely and run the VIN through the recall lookup.
Now, the cars.
Tesla Model S: The One That Started It All
History
The Model S launched in June 2012 and carried Tesla from a niche roadster company to a real automaker. It was the first electric car with genuinely long range, the first with over the air updates that meaningfully changed the car, and for years it was the technology flagship where everything debuted: Autopilot in 2014, Ludicrous mode in 2015, the tri motor Plaid in 2021.
The big structural moments in Model S history: the 2016 facelift that removed the fake front grille, the 2019 Raven update that quietly modernized the drivetrain and suspension (more on that below, because it’s easy to miss and genuinely matters), the switch from free unlimited Supercharging as a standard perk to a transferable sometimes perk (more below), the 2021 Palladium refresh that brought the horizontal screen, MCU3, the yoke steering option, and the Plaid powertrain, and finally the end. Tesla wound down Model S production in 2026, closing a fourteen year run. Tesla did give both cars one last refinement in June 2025 (covered in the generations below), but the larger redesign some had hoped for, the one that would have brought Cybertruck style steer by wire and an 800 volt architecture, never arrived. Tesla chose to retire the cars instead. That makes every Model S a used Model S soon enough, and it means parts and service will gradually shift to legacy vehicle status. Nothing to panic about, Tesla still services them, but worth knowing.
The Raven update, and why it matters used
In April 2019 Tesla gave the Model S and Model X an engineering update codenamed Raven, and it’s one of the most important dividing lines on the used market even though nothing about the exterior changed. Raven brought a new drivetrain that paired an efficient permanent magnet motor up front with an induction motor in the rear, a new adaptive air suspension, and faster charging. The result was a jump to 370 miles of range on the Long Range and a noticeably smoother, quieter car. In plain terms, a Raven car (roughly mid 2019 onward) is a meaningfully better used buy than a pre Raven car of the same body style, more range, better ride, and updated hardware, often for not much more money. If you’re shopping the 2016 to 2020 window, finding out whether a car is Raven or pre Raven is one of the more valuable questions you can ask.
Generations at a glance
2012 to 2016 (original): classic nose cone design, MCU1, HW1 or none. The earliest cars predate Autopilot entirely. Battery options ranged from the rare 40 kWh to the 85 and later 90 packs. These are enthusiast cars now. Cheap to buy, but you’re adopting a twelve year old EV with MCU1 and aging battery chemistry.
2016 to 2019 (facelift, pre Raven): the refreshed fascia, HW2.0 then HW2.5 then HW3 depending on build date, MCU1 then MCU2 from March 2018. The 100 kWh pack arrived. Solid cars, but this is the window where the Raven question matters most.
2019 to 2021 (Raven): the updated drivetrain and adaptive air suspension described above, with Long Range versions crossing 370 miles. HW2.5 or HW3, MCU2. This is the sweet spot of older Model S value if the specific car checks out, modern enough to live with, old enough to be affordable.
2021 to 2026 (Palladium refresh): horizontal center screen, MCU3, HW3 then HW4 in the final years, yoke or round wheel, Plaid at the top. The interior finally matched the price. These are the most modern used S examples and command the most money. Within this generation, note the June 2025 refinement below, since it separates the very last and most desirable cars from the rest.
June 2025 refresh (often sold as the 2026 model): Tesla gave the S and X one last round of updates in June 2025, and because Tesla doesn’t follow tidy model years, shoppers usually see these cars listed as 2026s. This was a refinement, not a redesign. The screen, doors, and basic architecture carried over. What changed: a quieter cabin with more insulation and better active noise cancellation, new wheel designs, dynamic ambient lighting, a front bumper camera, adaptive headlights, a blind spot indicator, and low resistance tires that pushed the Model S Long Range to 410 miles, the longest range of any Tesla ever. These final cars, built from mid 2025 until production ended in mid 2026, are the most feature complete used S examples you can buy, and the front bumper camera in particular is hardware the earlier cars simply don’t have.
Things you may want to check
The Model S has two famous trouble spots, and both are easy to check in person.
The door handles. The flush handles extend when you approach. On earlier cars especially, the mechanisms inside wear out, and a handle that hesitates, grinds, or doesn’t present is a known repair. Test every handle two or three times. Service records showing handle replacements are a plus, since it means those doors carry the newer revision.
The MCU1 screen. If you’re looking at a pre 2018 car, the eMMC memory issue is the single most important electronic check. Watch for slow boots, random reboots, ghost touches, a flickering backup camera, or a screen that takes minutes to wake. Ask directly whether the eMMC recall was performed, and verify the VIN against Tesla’s or NHTSA’s recall lookup. Also look for a yellow band around the screen’s edge on older cars. It’s cosmetic UV related adhesive discoloration, but it’s a negotiating point.
Air suspension. Many S trims ride on air suspension. Listen for the compressor running excessively, watch whether the car sits level after parking overnight, and note any suspension warnings on screen. Air suspension repairs aren’t free, but Tesla’s system tends to land in the mid range for luxury cars rather than the eye watering figures German rivals can hit, so price a quote before you let a seller use it to scare you off a good car.
Battery and charge port. Check the charging history if the seller can show it, test a DC fast charge if possible, and confirm the charge port opens and latches cleanly. On the drive, full throttle acceleration should be seamless. Any hesitation or power limitation warning deserves an explanation.
Free unlimited Supercharging. Some Model S cars, mostly 2012 to 2016 and certain 2017 to 2020 examples, carry free unlimited Supercharging tied to the car. On some it transfers to the next owner, on others it was tied to the original owner, and Tesla has changed the rules more than once. If a listing claims free Supercharging, verify it with Tesla by VIN before you pay a premium for it.
Tesla Model 3: The Volume Seller
History
The Model 3 was unveiled in March 2016, started deliveries in July 2017, and spent its first year in what Tesla called production hell as the company learned to build a mass market car. By 2019 and 2020 it had become the best selling electric car in the world and the car that dragged the whole industry into the EV era.
The two structural moments in Model 3 history are the early production ramp, which means 2017 and 2018 cars vary more in build quality than later ones, and the late 2023 Highland refresh, which reworked the suspension, quieted the cabin, redesigned both fascias, added a rear screen, and, controversially, replaced the turn signal stalk with buttons on the wheel. Highland cars began reaching the US in early 2024. In 2026 Tesla restructured the trim lineup again and introduced a lower priced Model 3 Standard.
Generations at a glance
2017 to 2020 (early cars): HW2.5 on the earliest builds, HW3 from April 2019, MCU2 throughout. Build quality improved dramatically across these years. On a 2017 to early 2019 car, confirming an HW3 retrofit is check number one.
2021 to 2023 (updated interior): the 2021 update brought the powered trunk, heat pump, new center console, and chrome delete. HW3 and MCU2, with MCU3 arriving in 2022 builds. These are the meat of the used Model 3 market: modern enough, plentiful, and well understood.
2024 to present (Highland): the full refresh, HW4, MCU3, and a noticeably more refined ride and cabin. The newest and most future proof used 3s.
A note on the missing turn signal stalk
This one deserves its own paragraph because it trips people up. When the Highland Model 3 arrived, Tesla deleted the turn signal stalk and moved the blinkers to buttons on the steering wheel. A lot of drivers hated it, especially the part where you try to signal mid turn and the button is now somewhere near your knee. Tesla eventually admitted it had removed one part too many. Tesla kept the stalk on the refreshed 2025 Model Y rather than going stalkless, then brought it back to the Model 3 as standard on 2026 builds, and Tesla began offering a retrofit stalk for stalkless 2023 to 2025 cars for a fee. So if you’re looking at a 2024 or 2025 Model 3, expect buttons, budget for the retrofit if it bothers you, and know that a 2026 car has the stalk back. The Cybertruck still lives the button life.
Things you may want to check
Suspension, specifically the control arms and links. This is the Model 3’s best known wear pattern, and it’s shared with the Model Y. Two separate issues live here. The first is the squeaking or creaking rear upper aft link, often called the camber link, whose bushing wears and announces itself over bumps. Annoying at first, but a failing bushing eventually affects alignment and tire wear. The second is more serious: NHTSA recall 21V-835 covers front lower lateral link fasteners that may not have been torqued properly at the factory and can loosen. On your test drive, find some bumps and listen for squeaks and clunks from either end. Then check the VIN against the recall database and confirm the lateral link recall work was done. Uneven front tire wear on the inside or outside edge is another tell that suspension geometry needs attention.
The 2026 federal suspension investigation, read this one carefully. In July 2026, NHTSA opened a preliminary investigation covering roughly 1.2 million Teslas over front lower lateral link detachments, specifically 2018 to 2020 Model 3s and 2021 to 2023 Model Ys, after NHTSA received 156 complaints about the part separating, in most cases with no warning. When that link lets go, the wheel alignment shifts suddenly and the car often has to be towed. Regulators have been clear that this probe goes beyond the older recalls and does not appear tied to the original factory torque issue, so a car that already had the 21V-835 recall done is not automatically in the clear. This is an open investigation, not yet a recall, and no remedy has been ordered. But if you’re shopping a Model 3 or Model Y in these years, it’s the single most important thing on this page. Have the front lateral links physically inspected on a lift before you buy, treat any clunk over bumps or vague, wandering steering as a reason to walk or to insist on that inspection, and keep every suspension related invoice, because if this becomes a recall, owners who already paid for the repair may be owed a refund.
Panel fit, paint, and seals on early cars. The 2017 to 2019 builds left the factory with more variation. Walk the car in good light, look at panel gaps around the trunk and doors, check for thin paint and touch ups, and if you can, run water over the rear window and trunk seal area, then check the trunk carpet and under floor storage for dampness. Water finding its way past the trunk seal is a documented early car complaint.
The screen and stalks. MCU2 cars should feel responsive. Sluggishness or reboots on a Model 3 screen isn’t the MCU1 story, it’s a sign something needs attention. On Highland cars, spend five minutes with the button based turn signals in a parking lot before you commit. Some people adapt instantly. Some never stop reaching for a stalk that isn’t there.
Charge port behavior. Cycle the charge port door a few times from the screen and the charge cable button. The actuator is a known small repair item across the lineup.
Tesla Model X: The Ambitious One
History
The Model X launched in September 2015 as the most complicated car Tesla ever built, and that complication is the theme of its whole story. The falcon wing doors, the panoramic windshield, the powered everything. Elon Musk himself has said they overcomplicated the X. As a used buy, it’s a luxury SUV with theatrical doors at a fraction of its original price, and the maintenance profile that description implies.
The X followed the S’s timeline in most ways: MCU1 into early 2018, then MCU2, the HW progression from HW1 era Autopilot through HW2.0, 2.5, and 3, the 2019 Raven update that brought the same improved drivetrain and adaptive air suspension the Model S got (the same used market dividing line applies here, a Raven X is the better buy), the 2021 Palladium style refresh with the horizontal screen, MCU3, and Plaid variant, the June 2025 refinement described below, and the end of production in 2026 alongside the Model S.
Generations at a glance
2015 to 2021 (original, with Raven from 2019): the classic X. Six or seven seat configurations, MCU1 then MCU2, HW progression by build date. As with the S, the 2019 Raven update brought better range and the adaptive air suspension, so a 2019 or 2020 X is a stronger buy than an earlier one. Early cars, 2016 and 2017 especially, carry the most door related service history. That’s not automatically bad. A car whose doors were sorted under warranty may be better than one that never saw a service bay.
2021 to 2026 (refresh): horizontal screen, MCU3, yoke option, Plaid at the top, HW3 then HW4 late. The most modern X is a genuinely quick, genuinely comfortable three row EV.
June 2025 refresh (often sold as the 2026 model): as with the S, Tesla gave the X a final round of refinements in June 2025, and most listings call these 2026s even though they launched mid 2025. Not a redesign, the falcon wing doors and core architecture carried over, but a worthwhile set of improvements: a quieter cabin, revised suspension bushings for a smoother ride, new 20 and 22 inch wheels, dynamic ambient lighting, a front bumper camera, adaptive headlights, a blind spot indicator, more third row shoulder room, and a range bump from roughly 329 to 352 miles. Plus a new Frost Blue paint. These final cars are the most complete used X you can find, and the extra third row space specifically addresses the X’s longest running complaint.
Things you may want to check
The falcon wing doors, thoroughly and patiently. This is the make or break inspection on any used X. Open and close each rear door multiple times, from the screen, from the key, and from the door itself. Watch the speed and symmetry of the motion. Listen for grinding or hesitation. Look at the alignment when closed: the door should sit flush with consistent gaps against the roof and the front doors. Misalignment shows up as wind noise, water intrusion, and seals that rub. Test the obstacle sensors by standing near the door’s path or placing something next to the car. Doors that hesitate, stutter, or close unevenly are repairable, but you want to know before you buy, not after. Consider this the single most important reason not to buy a Model X sight unseen.
Door handles and the self presenting front doors. Same flush handle wear pattern as the S, plus the X’s party trick of opening the front doors as you approach on some configurations. Test all of it repeatedly.
Wind noise and seals. Even a well sorted X has more glass and more moving bodywork than anything else on the road. On the highway portion of your test drive, listen around the falcon doors and the giant windshield’s top edge. Excessive noise usually traces back to seal or alignment issues that are worth pricing before purchase.
MCU1 on pre 2018 cars. Same eMMC story as the Model S. Same checks, same recall lookup.
Air suspension and tires. The X is heavy, and it eats tires faster than you’d expect. Check tread depth and wear pattern on all four corners, paying attention to the inside edges where alignment problems show up first, and give the air suspension the same overnight sag and compressor noise attention as on the S.
Tow package. Many X buyers want it for towing. Confirm the hitch hardware is present and the tow mode works, since it’s a common reason people cross shop the X against the Cybertruck.
Tesla Model Y: The One Everyone Buys
History
The Model Y was unveiled in March 2019 and started deliveries in March 2020. It’s a taller Model 3 that shares most of its parts, and that turned out to be exactly what the world wanted. In 2023 it wasn’t just the best selling EV on the planet, it was the best selling car of any kind, outselling the Toyota RAV4 and Corolla, the first time an electric car ever topped the global charts.
The Y’s structural history has three chapters: the 2020 to 2024 original, the Juniper refresh announced in January 2025 with deliveries through that year, and the arrival of the long wheelbase Model Y L in the US in mid 2026. Along the way there were meaningful production changes worth knowing about, including cars built at different factories with different battery types, and Tesla’s 2026 trim restructure that renamed the lineup.
Generations at a glance
2020 to 2024 (original): HW3 for most of the run, with HW4 arriving on later 2023 builds. MCU2 early, MCU3 from 2022. Early 2020 cars carry the usual first year variation in fit and finish. Some builds, particularly certain standard range cars, use LFP battery chemistry, which likes being charged to 100 percent regularly, while the long range cars use conventional chemistry that lives best between 20 and 80 percent. Ask which pack the car has, because it changes how you should charge it.
2025 to present (Juniper): the full refresh brought Cybertruck style light bars, a quieter cabin, a rear screen, revised suspension, and HW4 across the board. Notably, Juniper kept a physical turn signal stalk rather than following the stalkless path of the Highland Model 3. The newest premium 2026 cars also picked up a larger 16-inch screen. One important software era note for used shoppers: in January 2026 Tesla removed standard Autosteer (its basic lane centering) from newly sold US and Canadian cars, leaving only Traffic Aware Cruise Control standard and putting lane centering behind an FSD subscription. So on a car sold after that change, don’t assume it includes the driver assistance features an older car had bundled in. Check what’s actually active on the specific car.
Model Y L (2026): the long wheelbase, six seat Model Y, which debuted in China in 2025 and reached the US in July 2026 as a fully loaded Launch Series with deliveries beginning in the fall. It’s a genuine three row family configuration in a 2+2+2 layout rather than the cramped optional third row of the older seven seat Y. As a used buy it barely exists yet, the first US examples are only now reaching owners, but it will matter to this guide within a year or two, and early Launch Series cars with their bundled perks and badging will be the collectible spec. If you need six real seats in a used Tesla today, your realistic option is still a Model X, which is part of why used X values have held.
Things you may want to check
The same suspension items as the Model 3. The Y shares the 3’s control arm patterns, including the squeaky rear aft camber link and the front lateral link fastener recall, NHTSA 21V-835, which covered select 2020 and 2021 Model Y builds (and 2019 to 2021 Model 3s). Same test drive over bumps, same recall lookup, same look at front tire wear. And see the note below on the much larger 2026 federal investigation into this same part, because it is the single most important suspension item on this whole page for a Model 3 or Y shopper.
Early build quality. The 2020 cars especially deserve a slow walk around: panel gaps, paint quality, seat alignment, and the rear hatch fit. Tesla improved steadily through the run, and Juniper cars are a different league entirely.
Which battery, which factory. Ask whether the car is LFP or conventional chemistry, and follow the charging guidance for whichever it is. A seller who can’t answer likely never adjusted their charging habits, which isn’t disqualifying, but a documented charging history is always the better sign.
Heat pump behavior in cold climates. The Y has had a heat pump from the start. If you’re in a cold region, run the climate system hard during the test drive and make sure heat arrives quickly and consistently.
HW3 or HW4 on 2023 cars. The Y straddled the transition. Verify on the Software screen, not the window sticker.
Tesla Cybertruck: The New Kid
History
The Cybertruck was unveiled in November 2019, complete with the famous broken window demo, and after four years of delays it finally started deliveries on November 30, 2023. That makes it the newest vehicle in this guide by far, and the used market for it is correspondingly young and thin. Every used Cybertruck is an HW4 car with MCU3, so the hardware generation anxiety that dominates the rest of this guide barely applies here.
What does apply is trim history, because Tesla has reshuffled the lineup meaningfully in its short life.
Variants at a glance
Foundation Series (late 2023 to late 2024): the launch edition. All wheel drive or tri motor Cyberbeast configurations loaded with every option, laser etched badging, and lifetime perks that varied by build. Tesla discontinued the Foundation Series in October 2024. On the used market these carry a collectibility premium, and whether that premium is worth paying is a personal call. The badge doesn’t make the truck faster.
AWD and Cyberbeast (2024 onward): the regular production dual motor AWD and the tri motor Cyberbeast, which is the one with the acceleration numbers that make no sense for something shaped like a filing cabinet.
RWD Long Range (2025): Tesla added a cheaper rear wheel drive version in 2025 with reduced equipment. It exists in smaller numbers.
The 2026 restructure: in February 2026 Tesla simplified the lineup into three trims: a base AWD that drops the air suspension, rear touchscreen, and some interior trim and carries a lower tow rating, a Premium AWD, and the Cyberbeast. All share the same 123 kWh structural pack and 325 kW peak charging. For used shopping, the takeaway is that two AWD Cybertrucks from different years can differ meaningfully in equipment. Read the specific car’s spec sheet, don’t assume from the trim name.
Things you may want to check
The stainless panels and trim. The bare stainless body is unique, and so are its quirks. Look closely for fingerprint etching, corrosion spots, or discoloration, especially if the truck lived near the coast, and check the panel alignment along the tonneau, doors, and bed. Early trucks had documented issues with trim pieces, including the sail panel appliques, and an early recall involved the accelerator pedal pad. Run the VIN through the NHTSA recall lookup and confirm everything open was closed out.
The tonneau cover. Cycle the powered bed cover fully open and closed several times. It’s a big motorized part with a lot of travel, and you want to see it move smoothly and seal properly.
Steer by wire and the yoke. The Cybertruck has no mechanical steering connection, and the ratio changes with speed. It takes a few miles to recalibrate your hands. That’s not a defect, but it is a reason your test drive should include parking maneuvers and highway speed, so you know whether you like it before you own it.
Charging port and accessories. Confirm the truck charges at a Supercharger without drama, and inventory the accessories that should come with it, bed outlets working, ramps if listed, the works, since Cybertruck accessories are expensive to replace.
Why is it for sale? With a truck this new, the used listing itself is information. Some sellers are early adopters moving to the next thing, some got a truck that didn’t fit their life, and some are flipping. None of those are red flags by themselves, but a one year old truck with 2,000 miles and no service history tells a different story than a daily driven work truck, and you should know which one you’re buying.
The Universal Used Tesla Checklist
Whichever model you land on, these checks apply to every used Tesla.
Verify the hardware on the screen, not the listing. Controls, then Software. Read the Autopilot computer line and the MCU information yourself. Sellers get this wrong constantly, usually not out of malice, just because nobody ever taught them to look.
Understand what FSD status transfers. Since February 2026, FSD can’t be purchased outright on new cars, it’s subscription only. A used car with a legacy paid FSD license attached to it is carrying something you literally cannot buy anymore, and Tesla’s rules about whether that license survives a private sale versus a trade in have shifted over the years. Before you pay a premium for FSD included, confirm with Tesla by VIN what will actually be active after the title transfers. The same goes for free Supercharging claims.
Check the battery’s story. The range number a Tesla shows at 100 percent is a useful rough gauge, but it’s based on EPA rated efficiency, not a precise measurement of battery health, so don’t treat a slightly low number as proof of a bad pack on its own. The better move is Tesla’s built in Battery Health test, available on supported cars, which actually evaluates the pack, and on any car out of battery warranty, a service center inspection or reputable third party scan is money well spent. As a sanity check, comparing the current 100 percent projection against the car’s original advertised range will tell you roughly how much it has aged, expect single digit to low teens percentage loss on most healthy cars, more on older high mileage examples. Speaking of warranty: Tesla’s battery and drive unit warranty is 8 years with mileage caps that vary by model, and it transfers with the car. Know exactly how much is left on the specific VIN.
Run the recall lookup. NHTSA’s site and Tesla’s own VIN tool will show open recalls. Tesla performs recall work free, including the software ones, but you want them done, and the service history that comes with them.
Test every camera. Controls, Autopilot, Camera preview. Front, rear, repeaters, B pillars. Look for moisture or haze inside any lens.
Check the tires, including the inside edges. Walk all four corners and run your hand along the inner shoulder of each front tire, not just the part you can see standing up. Wear that’s heavier on the inside edge points to alignment or suspension geometry issues, which on a Model 3 or Y often traces straight back to the control arm story above.
Drive it like you’ll use it. Highway speed for wind noise and Autopilot behavior, rough pavement for suspension noises, a parking lot for the cameras, sensors, and charge port. Fifteen minutes around the block tells you almost nothing.
Get the history. Carfax or AutoCheck for accidents and title issues, plus whatever service records the owner kept. Teslas hide body repairs well. Mismatched paint texture, overspray in wheel wells, and misaligned panels on one corner of an otherwise tight car are your clues.
The Bottom Line
A used Tesla is one of the best values in electric cars right now, and also one of the easiest purchases to get wrong if you shop on year and price alone. The hardware inside, MCU and especially HW, matters more than the badge on the trunk, and five minutes in the Software menu tells you more than any listing photo. Buy the newest hardware your budget allows, verify everything on the car’s own screen, check the specific known wear items for the model you’re considering, and you’ll end up with a car that keeps improving over the air for years.
