From 2020 through 2022, GM recalled every Bolt for a rare battery fire risk, and many owners had their battery pack or modules replaced under warranty. When GM installed new or refurbished replacement hardware, the 8 year, 100,000 mile battery warranty on that new hardware started fresh from the day of the installation. That means a 2020 Bolt that got a replacement pack in 2023 could still be under battery warranty deep into the next decade. Ask the seller for the battery replacement date and documentation. The Kona’s efficiency is the story. It uses less electricity per mile than almost any other EV on this list. That makes overnight Level 1 charging work, because a small efficient car refills faster than a big thirsty one. It makes real world range match what the sticker promises more closely, roughly 230 to 260 miles in normal use. And it means the Kona is one of the cheapest EVs to run and to insure. Warranty coverage is a real advantage. The 2019 and 2020 model years need one check before you buy. NHTSA covered them under recall 21V-127 for a battery short circuit risk, and Hyundai replaced batteries or performed software updates depending on the case. Cargo is where the ID.4 flexes. Volkswagen lists 64.2 cubic feet with the rear seats folded, which is more than the Bolt, the Kona, and the Niro. It’s also the pick where the parents will look in the back on move in day and say, wait, we really might get all this in here. If the student is bringing a bike, a full sized futon, and half a moving truck’s worth of dorm gear, this is the car.
Range in real world testing is friendlier than the EPA rating suggests. Edmunds recorded 287 miles from a 2021 First Edition and 288 from a Pro against EPA ratings of 250 and 260 miles. Expect roughly 220 to 270 miles in normal driving, less in cold, more if you’re patient and drive it politely.
Battery warranty is 8 years or 100,000 miles from original in service date, with Volkswagen covering to at least 70 percent capacity. A 2021 ID.4 in service in early 2021 is covered until roughly 2029, subject to mileage. The ID.4 has two urgent 2026 recalls to know about before buying any 2023 through 2025 example. CarGurus shows a 2019 averaging around $18,034 and a 2022 at about $18,553, with the 2022 down only a few percentage points from a year ago even in a soft used EV market, which tells you the market has figured out the same thing. Realistic shopping range for 2019 through 2023 examples is about $17,000 to $23,000.
Insurance is where the Niro pulls ahead. Insurance.com‘s current national comparison puts the Niro EV around $2,239 per year for their standard driver profile, which puts it among the cheapest picks on this list to insure. For a student, that’s not a rounding error. That’s the difference between the EV pencilling out and not pencilling out.
Warranty coverage is the same as the Kona, because Kia and Hyundai are corporate siblings. 10 years or 100,000 miles from original in service date, transferable to subsequent owners. A 2022 Niro EV bought in 2026 has years of factory battery coverage remaining. That’s rare on any used car, let alone an eighteen thousand dollar one.
Real world range is friendly. Edmunds got 285 miles from a Niro EV in their test against a 239 mile EPA rating, and Recurrent‘s owner data shows the pack holding capacity well over time. In normal daily driving expect roughly 235 to 285 miles.
Cargo splits by generation. First generation 2019 through 2022 Niro EVs offer 53.0 cubic feet of cargo with the rear seats folded. That’s fine for the occasional weekend trip. It’s noticeably slower than a Model 3 or an ID.4 if a student is running a three hundred mile route home and stopping to fast charge along the way. Why Isn’t the Nissan Leaf Here
A college student browsing used EVs will see Leafs listed for less money than anything on this list, and it’s worth explaining why we skipped them. A Leaf isn’t a bad car. Older Leafs have been quiet, reliable local commuters for a decade, and if a student’s life is entirely within twenty miles of a home outlet, a cheap Leaf can absolutely make sense.
The problem is what happens outside that twenty mile bubble. The used Leafs a student will see cheaply, essentially 2011 through 2025 model years, use CHAdeMO for DC fast charging, and CHAdeMO is shrinking. New public chargers are being built for CCS or NACS, and there’s no clean adapter path to bring a CHAdeMO Leaf onto the Supercharger network. The all new 2026 Leaf switched to native NACS with Supercharger access, but the affordable used ones don’t share that story. On top of that, the older Leaf’s battery pack has no active thermal management, which means it can degrade faster in hot climates or with a lot of fast charging.
For a student who might own this car for four years and then keep it after graduation, that’s a bet on an increasingly narrow charging future. So the Leaf isn’t off the list because it’s a bad car. It’s off the list because we’re recommending broadly, and the Leaf is a car for a specific situation, not a general purpose used EV.
Before You Buy Any Used EV
Whichever car makes the shortlist, run this checklist before signing anything.
- Check the VIN for open recalls at nhtsa.gov. It’s free and takes thirty seconds. Note that NHTSA only shows unrepaired recalls, so for completed recall work or manufacturer service campaigns, ask the brand’s dealer to pull the service history.
- Verify the car’s original in service date, not just the model year. Battery warranty starts from in service, not from the day the car rolled off the line.
- Ask if the battery has ever been replaced under recall. On a Bolt in particular, a yes here can be a bonanza.
- Get an insurance quote in the student’s name before you put down a deposit. Same VIN. Same zip code. Real number.
- Confirm where the car will actually charge at the student’s address, not the hypothetical address. If it’s a 120 volt outlet, verify the outlet is on a circuit that can safely handle an EV for hours a day.
