At that rate, a typical pack still holds around 82 percent of its original capacity after eight full years on the road. Numbers are convincing. Actual cars that refuse to die are more fun. So here are a few electric vehicles that showed the fear the door.

Consider a Tesla Model 3 that spent its life as a taxi, fast charged constantly, and piled up 217,500 miles in about three years, which is about what the average American drives in sixteen years. After all that abuse, InsideEVs reported it still held 88.5 percent of its battery capacity and more than 300 miles of real range. It endured close to the worst charging life you could design on purpose and still shrugged.

Across the Atlantic, Carscoops covered a Model S used as an airport taxi that has racked up around 430,000 miles on its original battery and motors, frequently fast charged to full, and reportedly lost only about 65 miles from its original range rating. And at the truly absurd end, a Model S in Germany has passed well over a million miles, though that one needed several replacement battery packs along the way to get there. Nobody’s promising you a million miles on the original battery. The point is that the ceiling is so high it’s hard to see from the ground, and the taxis got there while living the hardest possible life.

Now, not every story is a fairy tale, and the data includes the harder cases too. Carscoops covered a well used Model 3 that racked up around 380,000 miles and saw its range fall by roughly a third, from 240 miles when new down to about 158. That’s real degradation, and it’s more than most owners will ever experience. But the car is still running, on its original pack, hundreds of thousands of miles in. Even the rough example isn’t a dead battery. It’s a tired one that kept going.

What Actually Wears a Battery Down

The reassurance is one thing. What to do about it is another. Here’s what the same research says actually wears a pack down, in rough order of impact.

The biggest thing you control is fast charging. Leaning heavily on high power DC fast chargers generates real heat and stress. Doing it constantly can push a battery’s yearly degradation noticeably higher than the average. Fast charging itself isn’t bad. It’s a wonderful thing to have on a road trip. A steady diet of nothing but fast charging is what takes a toll. Heat is the next factor. Batteries in consistently hot climates age a little faster than those in mild ones, which is why a passively cooled early EV baking in the desert was always the worst case, and why modern liquid cooled packs handle heat so much better.

Living at the extremes of the charge range plays a role too, but less than the internet insists. The common advice to keep the battery between 20 and 80 percent does help, and the data supports it. The effect only becomes significant if the car spends the large majority of its life sitting at a near full or near empty charge. An occasional charge to 100 percent for a trip is a non event.

Which turns all of this into three simple habits, none of which require you to become a battery monk. Charge at home on a normal Level 2 charger as your daily default, save the fast chargers for trips where you actually need the speed, and let the car sit around the middle of its range when you can. Do that and you’re already ahead of most of the fleet.

And If the Worst Happens?

Let’s address the fear directly. Yes, a battery can fail or degrade badly enough to need replacing, and yes, a replacement is an expensive repair. That’s true.

But two things keep it in perspective. The first is how uncommon it actually is. Outright pack replacements remain rare, especially on the more recent generations of EVs, and the taxi examples above show how much punishment a modern pack absorbs before it cries uncle. The second is that the cost picture has been quietly improving, because the price of battery packs has fallen dramatically over the last decade as production scaled up.
